(A
late post)
Compassion is defined as
a sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a
desire to alleviate it. “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” I love this Dalai Lama quote. It
takes time to become a compassionate person. First things first, it must be a
genuine act. There is no pretending when it comes to compassion. You can start
by developing a sense of empathy for others. When someone is suffering, try
placing yourself in their shoes, and try to really comprehend them. Be
there for them for moral support. Open your heart to them. If you were the
one suffering and wanted the pain to go away, what would you like for someone
else to do for you in order to make the pain vanish? Contemplate on that
thought and act on it. You can practice empathy by not only helping
alleviate someone’s pain but also by understanding them when they have
mistreated you. Instead of reacting with the same action they have offered
you, take a step back. Think about that person and their life. What was their
upbringing like? Are they having a bad day and perhaps taking it out on you?
Are they going through a situation, such as, a divorce, bills piling up, or
dealing with a health condition? Practice compassion by trying to place
yourself in their shoes once again, and understanding why they mistreated you,
and react with kindness.
